Mauricio Pochettino's PSG mission to realise his true Tottenham Hotspur destiny

Mauricio Pochettino appears to be on the verge of returning to management after 13 months out of the game.

Dismissed by Daniel Levy at Tottenham last November following a dismal start to the 2019/20 season, the Argentine has not taken on a new job despite plenty of speculation regarding his next position.

Heavily tipped to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United given their up and down form, Pochettino now looks on course to take on Thomas Tuchel's job at Paris Saint-Germain following the German's sacking just before Christmas.

The 48-year-old did represent the Ligue 1 side as a player from 2001-2003 and, providing that he does indeed sign on the dotted line, all at the Parc des Princes will be hoping he can lead the club to Champions League glory after plenty of failed attempts over the past few years.

Tottenham: 2020 in review

Despite his Tottenham exit after five-and-a-half years, Pochettino admitted in April that he does want to return to N17 at some point in the future and finish the job he started.

"It was an amazing journey that finished the way no one wanted it to finish," Pochettino told BT Sport (via Sky Sports).

"But deep in my heart, I am sure our paths will cross again. From the day I left the club, my dream is to be back one day and to try to finish the work we didn't finish. We were so closing to winning the Premier League and Champions League.

"But of course I am looking forward to moving on and I am so motivated for the next project.

"But deep inside I want to go back because the fans are so special. Maybe in five years, maybe in 10 years, but before I die I want to manage Tottenham.

"I want to feel what it means to win one title with Tottenham because the fans are amazing, all the love we received was amazing and that is a good opportunity to pay back all the love they showed us from day one."

Given how Pochettino could very soon be back in the game, here we take a look at how PSG potentially appointing him can benefit Tottenham in the long run going on his previous comments.

Prove he is a world-class manager

Pochettino came in for plenty of praise during his time at Tottenham after transforming the club following his 2014 arrival.

Previously contesting for a European spot but usually not having enough in the tank to secure a top-four finish, the former defender turned the Lilywhites into Champions League regulars.

As well as reaching the final of Europe's premier competition in 2019, Pochettino even went close in the Premier League title race on two separate occasions in 2016 and 2017.

A trophy managed to allude him, however, and his time at Spurs came to an end with no silverware in the cabinet at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Amid the debate over whether or not he is a world-class manager, Pochettino can end it for good at Paris-Saint Germain.

Winning Ligue 1 in seven of the last eight seasons, the club's main focus is on lifting the Champions League after losing out against Bayern Munich in the 2020 final.

Already through to the knockout phase to face Barcelona in the Round of 16, Pochettino can prove he is a world-class manager by getting the better of Europe's best on a regular basis.

If indeed he does return to Tottenham at some point, it will only bode well for Spurs in the future.

Manage big names

PSG have gone through five different managers over the past ten years at the Parc des Princes.

Antoine Kombouare, Carlos Ancelotti, Laurent Blanc, Unai Emery and Tuchel have all taken on the hotseat, with Pochettino expected to be the German's successor.

Much has changed at the club over that time period with Qatari owners QSI pumping some serious money into the club in their bid to become one of Europe's top teams.

Neymar joined in a world-record move back in the summer of 2017, with Kylian Mbappe also signing on the dotted line in the French capital a few weeks later.

PSG do have some big names in the dressing room and Pochettino will need to prove that he can manage them and keep them happy in their quest to taste success.

The Tottenham squad all bought into Pochettino's methods quickly and the team duly flourished as they contested at the top end of the league.

If he can do exactly that in Paris, Tottenham will only benefit later down the line if he makes a return to the capital.

Transfer market success

Pochettino didn't always have big money to spend at Tottenham during his five-and-a-half years at the club.

With rival clubs such as Man City, Chelsea and Manchester United spending heavily in the transfer market as they aimed to win the top prize, the Argentine really had to work to a budget with not a lot of dosh made available.

While the additions of the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Kieran Trippier and Son Heung-min did work, it's probably best not to mention the failures of Vincent Janssen, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Clinton N'Jie.

Pochettino's success in the transfer market was mixed to say the least, but it was always going to be like that as he tried to take a chance on some players due to the money he had available.

As Jose Mourinho has had an increased budget since replacing Pochettino at Tottenham, the Argentine will be intent on proving to everyone he can get it right in the transfer market more often than not as money will be made available to him at PSG.

The trophy question

Fans always believed that Tottenham would taste success under Pochettino but that just didn't happen prior to his departure.

Reaching the final of the League Cup and Champions League, Spurs were also unsuccessful in semi-finals on a couple of occasions as they looked to win a trophy for the first time since 2008.

The wait still goes on for that elusive piece of silverware but the hope is that Mourinho can get the job done this campaign with Spurs still competing in four competitions.

All eyes are going to be on Pochettino in Paris but he will be expected to win his first trophy pretty soon with the French club dominating Ligue 1 in recent seasons.

However, the main prize they all want at the club is the Champions League trophy.

Winning silverware does become a bit of a habit once a manager lifts a trophy for the first time, as has been the case with Mourinho, and Pochettino will hope that does come true as he looks to return to Tottenham in the future and achieve his dream of finishing the job he started.
