Mauricio Pochettino's Manchester United stance could hinder his long-term Tottenham Hotspur plan

Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly keen on becoming the new manager of Manchester United - something that could hinder his long-term Tottenham Hotspur ambitions.

United confirmed the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday following an extremely poor run of form.

In his last game in charge, United were handed a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Watford.

Pressure had mounted on the Norwegian following a 5-0 hammering to Liverpool and an equally disappointing 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, both taking place at Old Trafford.

A 3-0 win over Tottenham in between those two losses softened the blow for a short while, but the convincing defeat to Claudio Ranieri's side was enough for the United board to finally bring an end to Solskjaer's time in charge.

And as per our colleagues at the Manchester Evening News, Pochettino is open to taking over from Solskjaer at United right now, rather than in the summer.

According to the report, the current PSG coach has long-harboured ambitions to manage United and was the club's initial choice to succeed Jose Mourinho in 2018, but Solskjaer effectively convinced the United board to make his caretaker appointment permanent with 14 wins from his first 19 games.

United had previously suggested that they were keen on appointing an interim manager until the end of the season, but with news of Pochettino's availability now surfacing, perhaps they'll consider making a permanent decision sooner rather than later.

Nevertheless, if he does make the decision to leave PSG for United in the coming weeks, he could hinder his long-term plan to become Tottenham's manager once again.

Before agreeing to join PSG, Pochettino appeared on BT Sport to discuss his future, and was direct in his answer when asked whether he would ever return to Spurs.

"Deep inside, I think maybe in five years, maybe in 10 years, the universe will see that before I die I will manage Tottenham again," he said.

He'll always be loved at Spurs, but if a project at United ends up being successful, he may choose to stay there for years to come, and his dream of managing the north London outfit again one day may never come to fruition.
