Mauricio Pochettino's former team-mate on why he is backing Liverpool over Spurs in Madrid

One of Mauricio Pochettino's former teammates, Maxi Rodriguez, has backed Liverpool to beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final next month.

Spurs clash with Liverpool in Madrid on Saturday, June 1 in pursuit of Europe’s biggest prize, where Pochettino is aiming to lift his first trophy in charge of the Lilywhites.

That will be a tough ask against a record-breaking Liverpool side who have excelled this season though and Rodriguez, himself a former Reds player, has backed Jurgen Klopp to guide the Merseyside outfit to glory.

"Fair play is different in England and you have to learn fast and respect it. When I went to Liverpool, I had to adapt. I played with [Mauricio] Pochettino, but I want Liverpool to be champions,” he told FOX Sports Argentina .

"Anfield is one of the best stadiums I have played in. The atmosphere and the people there are amazing.

"English football now has a clear long-term strategy and a plan. You can see the results, all four finalists in Europe are English and they did well in the last World Cup.

"Liverpool couldn't win the Premier League because of how Manchester City were playing. I love how Liverpool are playing. This kind of competition will only make both teams better."
