Mauricio Pochettino's comments on Philippe Coutinho amid links to Bayern Munich job

Mauricio Pochettino has emerged as a contender for the Bayern Munich job just days after leaving Tottenham .

Pochettino was sacked by Spurs on Tuesday after a poor start to the season and has now been replaced by Jose Mourinho.

The Argentine is already being tipped for a number of top jobs across Europe with Bayern looking for a permanent successor for Niko Kovac.

Pochettino is believed to be under consideration from the Bundesliga champions, reports Sky in Germany.

And if he does land the Bayern job, Pochettino will reunite with a player he knows very well, Philippe Coutinho.

Pochettino worked with the Brazilian during their time at Espanyol, and was said to be fuming when Daniel Levy ignored his pleas to sign him for Spurs last summer.

There are suggestions he even personally called the 27-year-old to urge him to move to north London.

Coutinho would go on to join Bayern on loan from Barcelona as he bids to save his reputation.

Speaking in 2013, ahead of a match between Southampton and Liverpool , Pochettino said: "As with most Brazilians, Philippe has a special magic in his feet. He has that same quality as Ronaldinho and Messi.

"Aside from the magic that he has, he also has an amazing work rate and that makes us doubt whether he fits the mould of a typical Brazilian player or a European one because his work ethic is outstanding."

Coutinho became a leading Premier League player at Liverpool, while Pochettino moved from Southampton to Spurs.

He may not have even landed a Premier League job, had Saints chief Nicola Cortese not been on a scouting trip to Espanyol to watch Coutinho when Pochettino caught his eye.

The Brazilian would join Barcelona in a £140m deal in January 2018, one that Pochettino understood.

"I know Philippe from when we brought him from Inter to Espanyol. I coached him for six months when he was 17," he said.

"We know that Barcelona for Brazilians is a special city. Obviously, for Philippe, after five years in Liverpool, where it's very cold and it rains a lot, and when you have your wife and children, it's difficult for a Brazilian to turn down a chance like this one."

The pair could now reunite in Munich, if Pochettino does end up taking the job and salvage part of their respective reputations.
