Mauricio Pochettino reveals why he met with Unai Emery after Arsenal sacking

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that he met up with former Arsenal head coach Unai Emery, after both men were sacked by their respective clubs.

Despite reaching the Champions League final last season, Pochettino was relieved of his duties by Tottenham in November after a poor run of form and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Emery lost his job in the same month, after Arsenal's dismal slump saw them fall well off the pace in the hunt for a top four spot.

And Pochettino has explained that he and former Spurs assistant Jesus Perez took the time to meet up with Emery to talk about their north London careers.

"I’ve had many conversations through Zoom and Skype [since] With different people," Pochettino said.

"I was in contact with a lot of people that wanted to talk to us, wanted to hear from us, our ideas.

"Before the pandemic, me and Jesus met with Unai Emery, sharing a coffee. We met to talk and to share our experiences.

"We were working in different clubs. We were at the enemy, but we finished at around the same time and then we were taking a coffee and people were walking past and saying 'Unai and Pochettino and Jesus are now sharing a coffee!'

"It was in Cockfosters, very close to Arsenal and Tottenham’s training grounds. It was very funny."

Pochettino was also asked whether he has spoken to Mourinho since the Portuguese took over his job.

"Yes, yes, yes," he replied. "Look, with Jose, we know each other for a long time. When I was the coach of Espanyol, and he was at Real Madrid, we had a very good relationship. He’s a top coach.

"In life, look what happens. I'd always think [in those days] I’d replace him. He was at Real Madrid. I'd [think to myself] 'Oh, maybe one day I can take your place at Real Madrid' and look at how life works out!

"He has taken my place at Tottenham. Unbelievable, eh?"
