Mauricio Pochettino rejects new job as former Tottenham boss eyes return to management

Mauricio Pochettino reportedly rejected the opportunity to become new Monaco manager as the former Tottenham boss eyes a return to management.

The Argentine has been out out of the dugout since leaving Spurs earlier this season to be replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Monaco sacked Robert Moreno over the weekend, the fourth boss they have axed in the last two years, with former Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac succeeding him.

However, according to The Athletic, Kovac was not the first choice of the Principality club.

Newly-appointed sporting director Paul Mitchell reportedly approached Pochettino and offered him the job, only to be rebuffed.

The opportunity presented to Pochettino is described as 'lucrative', but it wasn't enough for the ex-Southampton boss to make the move.

Monaco finished the curtailed Ligue 1 campaign in ninth thus missing out on European football next term, with Pochettino likely to be pursuing an opportunity with a club in the Champions League.

Despite a poor run of form leading to his dismissal in north London, Pochettino had relative success at Tottenham.

He established Spurs in the top four of the Premier League and took them to within 90 minutes of a first-ever European crown, only to be beaten by Liverpool in Madrid.

Having cut his teeth at Espanyol and Southampton, Pochettino was appointed by Totenham in May 2014 and spent five-and-a-half years with the Londoners.

In all, he won 159 of his 293 games in charge, drawing 62 and suffering 72 defeats.
