Mauricio Pochettino opens up on his agony after Tottenham's Champions League final defeat

Mauricio Pochettino said losing the Champions League final last season was one of the worst feelings of his career but that he is now ready to move on from the loss.

Tottenham made it to the first European Cup final in the club's history by beating the likes of Manchester City and Ajax in the knock-out stages, but were then disappointing in the final, slumping to a 2-0 defeat to Premier League rivals Liverpool .

Pochettino admits it was his lowest moment as a manager, and was only comparable to one match he was a part of as a player with Argentina.

Speaking to the Standard , Pochettino said: "It was very bad. I compare with summer 2002, when we drew with Sweden and were beaten by England in the group stage at World Cup, within one week. As a player and as a manager both are the worst moments in my career.

"All the effort we made to get to the final was unbelievable but you want to win and when you don’t it's massive because you know how tough it is to get there again next season, to start to find the energy to try to win – that is why it is difficult to recover."

Spurs will be hoping to progress to the latters stages of the competition again next season, and Pochettino said the start of a new campaign should bring fresh optimism to his squad following the damaging defeat.

"When you start a new season [it is a] new kit, new everything," he added. "It's good because it changes. When you see a picture from the past it always goes quick. Now all is new, new colour and of course new motivation. The good thing is that winners move on quickly."

Spurs will take part in the Audi Cup in Munich next week, where they will take on Real Madrid and either Bayern Munich or Fenerbahce, before they start their Premier League campaign with a home game against Aston Villa on Saturday 10 August.
