Mauricio Pochettino on why Harry Kane is out for Spurs at Everton as he talks captaincy decision

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has opened up on why Harry Kane is sitting out this afternoon's clash at Everton.

Spurs came into the contest looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League after a rough start to the season.

It was a narrow 2-1 defeat at Liverpool which cost Spurs all three points last time out and their chances of beating Everton took a hit before kick-off after it was revealed that Kane was out.

The rumblings began prior to kick off and it was confirmed shortly before the game that Kane had not travelled up to Merseyside.

Pochettino has since spoken about Kane's illness and why he has handed Ben Davies the captaincy in the absence of the star striker.

"He and his family got a virus and started to feel bad on Friday night," Pochettino told Sky Sports. "It was impossible for him to train on Saturday and now he cannot play.

"It's difficult with an injured player. We are going to try to cope with this situation. We have a good squad and different people can step up."

On Davies, Pochettino added: "He is an experienced player and he plays for his national team. He is a very good player."
