Mauricio Pochettino makes startling Liverpool admission ahead of Anfield trip

Mauricio Pochettino has astonishingly heaped praise on Liverpool ahead of Tottenham's clash with the title challengers on Sunday.

The Argentine boss takes his side to Anfield with Liverpool hot on the tails of league leaders Man City.

With Spurs 16 points off the pace, Pochettino's men are all-but out of the race, but can still have a huge hand in how it plays out.

But Pochettino has admitted that his team are not good enough to be competing with those above them in the table.

“You cannot compare [Liverpool and Tottenham ],” Pochettino said to Sky Sports . “When Klopp arrived at Liverpool it was only about focusing on building a team that could compete and be a real contender with other teams.

Sadio Mane says he feels more pressure watching Man City than playing for Liverpool

“Our philosophy is completely different, we can't compare the two projects. They are on a completely different level."

Spurs travel to Liverpool with the Reds hoping for a win to close the gap on City back to one point, after the Sky Blues win at Fulham on Saturday.

The North Londoners have been through a poor patch of form of late though, picking up just one point in the last four games.

Whether Pochettino's comments are an attempt at mind games ahead of the clash is unclear.

However he took what could be regarded as a thinly veiled swipe at club owner Daniel Levy over their lack of signings this season.

Pochettino said: "In the last two transfer windows we didn't sign one player – it's like we are banned!

“We are focused on different things [to Liverpool], that's why we are different, and we must be focused on operating in different ways and still be competitive as football is the most important thing in this company.

“[Liverpool] have an unbelievable squad and every season they add more quality. So it's normal that Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea are building to win and be real contenders.”
