Mauricio Pochettino makes Daniel Levy transfer window 'mistake' claim

Mauricio Pochettino claims Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy realises it was a “massive mistake” to close the transfer window early.

Tottenham voted to shut the window on the eve of the Premier League season, even though trading in the other major European leagues is continuing until September 2.

This has left Pochettino with the problem of managing the unsettled Christian Eriksen , who wants to leave for one of Europe’s elite sides and is refusing Spurs’ offer of a new contract.

He says Levy and the other Premier League chairmen who voted to bring forward the transfer deadline know they were wrong and that they must switch the date back for next year.

“I wasn’t in agreement, but at that moment they believed that was best for the clubs,” said Pochettino.

“But I think he [Levy] and a lot of people now realise it was a massive mistake.

“I hope that we fix the problem for the next season.

“I think we need to go back and operate in the same way that they operate in Europe because I think it’s massive when you go to compete in the Europa League or Champions League.

“Champions League teams can be a problem for a team like us and it’s so clear that I cannot be happy as a coach that in the last three or weeks clubs from Europe can unsettle your team.

“For me it’s not common sense and we need to go back quick. I hope they have a good conversation at the Premier League and go back quickly.”

Tottenham as his dream summer move looks to be falling apart.

And White Hart Lane chiefs are increasingly baffled by Eriksen’s decision to snub all contract talks.

Spurs have offered in excess of £200,000 a week, which would put him among the highest earners at the club, but the Dane star has his heart set on a move to Barcelona , Real Madrid or Juventus .
