'Mauricio Pochettino for Man Utd': Gary Neville hails 'outstanding candidate' after Jose Mourinho sacking

Gary Neville believes Mauricio Pochettino is the "outstanding candidate" to succeed sacked Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

Mourinho's United tenure is over after the Premier League club announced his departure on Tuesday morning, with Zinedine Zidane and Mauricio Pochettino among the favourites to succeed the Portuguese boss.

United aim to have an external caretaker manager appointed in time for Saturday’s trip to Cardiff with a view to appointing a permanent replacement in the summer.

And Neville believes Pochettino should be the next man to take the reins.

"For me the next manager of Man United should be Mauricio Pochettino," the former full-back said after Sunday's disappointing defeat to Liverpool.

"When I look at values at Man United, I look at his belief in young players.

"His performance levels, style of play, the way he’s carried himself. I was fortunate enough to spend two or three days at Tottenham’s training ground. My view is he is somebody who brings the three key principals of the club: style of play, promotion of youth and winning football matches.

"He is the person who is the outstanding candidate."

Neither assistant Michael Carrick nor academy head Nicky Butt will be placed in temporary charge until the end of the season.
