Mauricio Pochettino expects to have influence on Chelsea signings amid 'very good' transfer talks with owners

Mauricio Pochettino says he will be involved in Chelsea’s transfer activity in January and that the dialogue between him and the owners remains positive.

Pochettino will have some say in deciding targets alongside influential co-owner Behdad Eghbali and co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart.

Chelsea are weighing up whether to target a forward and a central defender when the window opens on January 1.

Asked whether he will have a say, Pochettino said: “I cannot conceive the idea of not being involved.”

Chelsea will take a more cautious approach than they did last January, when they spent £290million on players including Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez and Noni Madueke in a spending spree that left then-manager Graham Potter with a squad of over 40 players.

Pochettino has also said that he believes in his current squad, despite a disappointing start to the season leaving the Blues in 10th place in the Premier League.

“It is not only about my advice," he said. “It is about sharing after six months together with the owners and sporting directors.

"It is very good communication. We talk every single day. Of course, the decision that we are going to take is because we all agree.

"If we detect something we need to improve, then we are more than open. We are very analytical and always analyse ourselves to help the club in the best way possible."

Chelsea travel to Luton on Saturday in what will be Nicolas Jackson's last Premier League match before he joins the Senegal squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Pochettino believes Jackson is facing too much criticism for missing chances, and has praised the supporters who stuck by him during the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

"We are putting too much focus on him and we need to give him time," Pochettino said about Jackson. “The fans were amazing with him.

"For sure, we need to give him time but he already scored. It is not that he doesn't score, and if we check in the past about how different strikers arrive in England and perform in the first season, we are now months into it, and he has scored goals like [Didier] Drogba or [Jimmy Floyd] Hasselbaink.

"The player is young, coming from Spain after not playing so much. He is a very good prospect with potential but we are also playing for Chelsea.

"It is not the same as playing for a different club, with all my respect, but the pressure every time you touch the ball is to do something fantastic.

"That's why little by little we will grow a little with our experience to perform better."
