Mauricio Pochettino denies claims he was offered Newcastle job

Mauricio Pochettino has denied claims he was approached by the would-be owners of Newcastle United this summer.

The former Tottenham boss and Rafa Benitez were both strongly linked with the St James' Park hotseat before the collapse of the takeover.

Pochettino had reportedly been targeted by the consortium - led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), Amanda Staveley and the Reuben Brothers - in the event of the Premier League approving the deal.

Spanish title Marca claimed the former Southampton manager turned down a "mega contract" to take over at United.

However, the 48-year-old insists he was never approached about the prospect of succeeding Steve Bruce on Tyneside.

The former Argentinian international does not have an agent and expressed his surprise at the media links to several European sides including the Magpies.

In a Spanish radio interview, Pochettino claims Benfica and Monaco are the only clubs to have contacted him since his departure from Tottenham in November last year.

Pochettino told Cadena COPE : "I don't know who was putting my name on so many clubs"

"Barcelona did not offer me. Neither did PSG, nor Juventus or Newcastle. Benfica and Monaco did call."

Pochettino confirmed in the same interview it is his "dream" to one day manage at Real Madrid.
