Mauricio Pochettino claims his Southampton side changed Premier League and English football

Mauricio Pochettino believes his Southampton team from the 2013/14 season had the biggest impact in "changing the mindset" of English football of any side to date.

The former Tottenham Hotspur boss was reflecting on leading the Saints to an eighth-place finish in the Premier League - their best result since 2003.

And the Argentinian claimed his squad pioneered a "different style of football" influenced by his time managing Espanyol in Spain.

A number of stars enjoyed a glittering season under Pochettino's management, including Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert - all of whom went on to later join Liverpool.

Morgan Schneiderlin, Luke Shaw and Jay Rodriguez also impressed and the latter two went on to make their debuts for England that season.

And Pochettino insists his side - rather than Jurgen Klopp's dominant Liverpool team or Pep Guardiola's Manchester City 'Centurions' - revolutionised the Premier League.

The Athletic report he opened up on the impact of that Saints team during La Liga TV show Guillem Balague’s Talking Football .

“Football in England changed with that Southampton team of 2013-14, there is no other team that had as big an impact in changing the mindset,” Pochettino said.

“We arrived at a club with a president like Nicola Cortese who gave us what we needed to create something unique in English football.

"Our ability to adapt to a completely different environment was incredible.

"We found a group of players who wanted to learn from the experiences we brought from Spanish football, and with the quality to play a different style of football to that which everyone in English football was used to.

"Young players started to appear, and people started to trust in young players, also in the English national team.”

Pochettino's full interview is due to be aired on Sky Channel 435 on Monday at 8pm (BST).
