Mauricio Pochettino claim made as struggles continue for record-breaking Tottenham star

Mauricio Pochettino reportedly felt he would have been able to get the best out of frustrating Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele had he not been sacked by the north London club.

Ndombele's future has been up in the air in the two years, with the midfielder struggling to find the form that sealed his club-record move to north London.

The 24-year-old did not get into a rhythm during his first year at the club, with Pochettino being replaced by Jose Mourinho just three months into the new season.

Mourinho's trademark style did not seem to gel well with Ndombele, who found himself on the fringes of the squad before Mourinho himself was relieved of his duties with last season winding down.

football.london reported during the summer that the Frenchman had informed Tottenham that he wanted to leave the club, having previously revealed that Pochettino was the driving factor behind his decision to move from Lyon.

“Had Pochettino stayed [things might have been different]. That’s a really important thing to remember," Charlie Eccleshare told the View From the Lane podcast.

“If you ask them, Pochettino and his team, they really felt that they could get something out of Ndombele and he could have been a success.”

The Argentinian was sacked by Spurs in November 2019, just four months after a club-record £55million was splashed on Ndombele and, at this moment in time, they have not seen too much of a return on the midfielder.

In his two seasons at the club, Ndombele has played 54 Premier League games but has contributed just five goals and four assists in that time - though one was a stunning finish against Sheffield United.

Pochettino has been in charge of Paris Saint-Germain since January 2021. Having swapped Ndombele for Lionel Messi he will no doubt be seeking to add a Champions League trophy to his honours list, after coming so close with Spurs in 2019.
