Mauricio Pochettino breaks his silence after Mourinho arrival and sends message to Spurs players

Mauricio Pochettino has sent a farewell message to Tottenham's players.

The Argentinian was sacked by Spurs on Tuesday, with Jose Mourinho appointed as his replacement.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy explained his reasons for parting company with the 47-year-old in a statement: "We were extremely reluctant to make this change and it is not a decision the Board has taken lightly, nor in haste.

“Regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing.

“It falls to the Board to make the difficult decisions - this one made more so given the many memorable moments we have had with Mauricio and his coaching staff - but we do so in the Club's best interests.

“Mauricio and his coaching staff will always be part of our history. I have the utmost admiration for the manner in which he dealt with the difficult times away from a home ground whilst we built the new stadium and for the warmth and positivity he brought to us. I should like to thank him and his coaching staff for all they have contributed. They will always be welcome here.

“We have a talented squad. We need to re-energise and look to deliver a positive season for our supporters.”

Pochettino has not made a public statement since his sacking, but he wrote a farewell message to the Spurs squad seen in a social media post by his assistant Jesus Perez.

Written on a tactics board in the changing room, the message said: 'Big thanks to you all! We want to say goodbye, you will always be in our hearts,' and was signed by Pochettino and his coaching team.

Mourinho held his first press conference as Spurs head coach on Thursday, and the former Manchester United boss paid tribute to his predecessor.

"I've been smiling for two days," he said. "First of all I do it with a bit of sadness, I have to speak about Mauricio.

"I have to congratulate him on the incredible job he did. I share with you what we shared inside.

"This club will always be his home, this training ground his training ground. He is always welcome here.

"Tomorrow is another day. He will find happiness soon. He will give everything like he did at this club.

"He will leave with sadness with the feeling that he did great work. It is what everyone at the club felt."
