Tottenham have sounded out Mauricio Pochettino about making a sensational return.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is open to bringing back the former boss just 18 months after he was sacked from White Hart Lane.
But Paris Saint Germain are unlikely to be willing to let him leave without a major fight and that may ultimately block any chance of Pochettino going back.
Tellingly, Paris Saint Germain responded to reports about Pochettino’s potential return by putting out a club video with the Argentinian manager talking about his future plans for the club.
Pochettino remains a hugely popular figure among Tottenham fans and it would be a dream appointment among the supporters who have been left fed-up after a disappointing season.
Pochettino won the French Cup with PSG after taking over in January, has a year left on his contract but missed out on the Ligue 1 title.
His coaching team have also been stuck in lockdown since he took charge and it has been a frustrating time so far after losing to Manchester City in the Champions League so Spurs feel he could be open to a move.
That appointment would be a big winner on Levy’s part and a popular move and it would be a big admission that he got it wrong in November 2019 by sacking Pochettino to bring in Jose Mourinho.
The Mourinho experiment did not work and Tottenham sacked him in May as the Special One failed to restore former glories to the club.
Tottenham are desperately looking to change the mood with the next appointment and yet they have struggled to get their targets over the line.
They made Julian Nagelsmann their original No1 target but the ex-RB Leipzig boss has taken over at Bayern Munich.
Tottenham also looked at Roberto Martinez and Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag but have not made any progress while Antonio Conte is now available but, while they considered him, they are looking elsewhere.
However, PSG have yet to receive an official approach from Tottenham and that may be rebuffed if they do. Levy would hope Pochettino might even be able to help persuade Harry Kane to stay.
Meanwhile, long-serving full back Danny Rose, 30, has left the club after 14 years after his contract expired.
There should be no shortage of offers for ex-England left back Rose as a free agent.
