Mauricio Pochettino and Harry Kane "conversation" hinted at by former Tottenham star

Andros Townsend has claimed he would be “very surprised” if Harry Kane and Mauricio Pochettino haven’t already spoken about a Tottenham reunion.

The former Spurs winger also believes his old team should break the bank in order to prise the Argentinian away from Paris Saint-Germain.

Pochettino left Spurs at the end of 2019, just months after guiding the club to the Champions League final.

Jose Mourinho subsequently replaced him, before he was named as Thomas Tuchel’s replacement at the Parc des Princes.

However, less than two years later, Pochettino is in line for a return to north London, after Mourinho’s tenure turned sour.

Spurs hope to bring the 49-year-old back to the club, in what could prove to be a pivotal factor in deciding Kane’s future with the club.

PSG are adamant they will hold onto their coach, despite his failure to win the Ligue 1 title in his first season in the dugout.

But Townsend, who played 42 times under Pochettino at Spurs, believes Daniel Levy must do everything to seal his return.

“If you’re Spurs you have to break the bank to bring Mauricio Pochettino back,” he told talkSPORT.

“He’s the most successful manager the club has had, the club were going places - final of the Champions League - had a minor blip and they parted ways.

“But to get someone like Pochettino back, off the hands of PSG, one of the richest clubs in the world would be an unbelievable coup.

Should Spurs 'break the bank' to rehire Mauricio Pochettino? Comment below

“He’s got unfinished business at Spurs, the way it was left, it was left open to return. The chairman came out and said he had no option but to let him go, but he’d be open to reappointing him in the future.

“Mauricio has now gone away to PSG, yes he’s won a cup, but he’s not won what he would have wanted to win.

“That’s why I was surprised to see that he wants to come back so soon, but from Spurs’ side - break the bank, get him back and get back to where you were two years ago.”

Kane himself has been linked with an exit after reports claimed he informed Levy he would look to leave.

However, Townsend thinks that should Pochettino decide to return, it would be a clear signal that discussions have taken place between player and coach.

“The relationship Pochettino and Harry Kane had, I’d be very surprised if they didn’t already have a conversation,” Townsend continued.

“Would Pochettino want to go to a Kane-less Spurs? Probably not.

“So again, he will have probably had those reassurances, if not from Harry Kane, from Daniel Levy that he will be going nowhere.”

Kane has previously described his former manager as "a close friend", but refused to comment on any speculation linking him with a potential reunion as he looks to focus on England's Euro 2020 campaign.
