Mauricio Pochettino admits he couldn't stop crying after Champions League final defeat

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed he could not stop crying after Tottenham ’s Champions League defeat last year.

Following the north Londoners’ epic aggregate wins against Manchester City and Ajax, their dreams of a fairytale triumph were ended by Liverpool in a 2-0 defeat.

Pochettino said: “I was so disappointed. It was difficult to stop crying, to stop feeling bad. It was a massive achievement (to get there).

“You can use the example of Liverpool after they lost to Real Madrid the season before, that was a massive motivation and inspiration to be back in the future.

“(But) I knew that after five years and with the way we were working, and all the things that happened, it was going to be difficult to come back.”

Pochettino has also revealed he has contacted City manager Pep Guardiola following the death of his mother who had contracted coronavirus.

Pochettino said: “Obviously, we feel the pain and shock for how it has affected people, when it has touched them very closely. With Pep Guardiola, for example. I sent him a message after his mum passed away.

“My worry is not only how the virus is scaring people and making them suffer, it’s how it’s going to affect us if we don’t have the capacity to move on again and to help make peoples’ lives easier.”
