Maura Derrane's husband John Deasy 'enjoying' lockdown and spending time with son Cal

Maura Derrane has said that her husband John Deasy is embracing his role as school teacher and care giver to their son Cal since he retired from Dail Eireann.

The RTE presenter added that the former Waterford TD is really enjoying his time at home and he is really taking time to pause and relax now that he has moved away from politics.

She said: "I think John is enjoying it. He loves that kind of thing, and I would say he was a scholarly kid himself, though he would deny it now. He is committed.

"He never starts a job that he doesn't finish.

"I am great at multitasking, but nothing ever gets finished. John does one thing and carries it through."

Maura added to Life Magazine: "He is brilliant at getting things done, so I let him off."

Maura said that Cal loves reading and he is already very advanced when it comes to books.

She said: "Cal's very bookish.

"He loves books, so I got him a huge bundle of new books the other day, threw in some Roald Dahl, that kind of thing, as I think he is ready for that now

"But John is going all the school work and the school are sending really nice stuff."

Following two decades as a TD, John decided not to seek reelection in the last general election at the beginning of Feburary.

Maura, who fronts Today with Maura and Daithi on RTE One, said: "It is just so crazy right now. He ran four times in total. He has been in the Dail 20 years, and he always said that once he left, he would pause and take a breath.

"When you are in something like that for a long time, you come out of and it is like coming out of an institution. You have to allow time to evolve to decide what to do next.

"In fact, he is so good at the schoolwork, that I reckon this is the next phase for him. I haven't told him yet. I am breaking it to him slowly."
