Matty Longstaff wins goal of the month as Manchester United fans say vote result is 'trolling' club

Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff's October has been rounded off nicely after his debut goal against Manchester United was voted goal of the month.

The 19-year-old scored the only goal of the game in the victory of The Red Devils earlier this month, and after cementing himself fully within the first-team squad, the North Shields teenager won Match of the Day's monthly vote.

While Newcastle United fans praised the decision, news of Longstaff's win from other sets of fans was less favourable - especially from Manchester United fans with some even accusing the vote just another way of "trolling" the club.

Reaction on Twitter included "despite it being the worst of the nominees' and 'it’s amazing how many people just love seeing Man United screwed over".

Not that Longstaff will mind because as our chief sports writer Lee Ryder pointed out, things could have been very different for the academy graduate.

Longstaff's goal came top with 22% of the vote, beating Jay Rodriguez and Jamie Vardy to the prize.

The goal saw Miguel Almiron clear from his own box with a superb pass to Allan Saint-Maximin who took on several defenders before playing Jetro Willems, who turned and set up Longstaff for a sweet drive into the net.
