Matty Longstaff set for Under-23 run-out as Newcastle United midfielder builds fitness

Newcastle United youngster Matty Longstaff is set for a reserve-team run-out against Fulham at St James' Park on Monday - suggesting that the clash against Man United has come too early for him.

The England Under-20 international grabbed the winner and all of the headlines in last season's 1-0 win over the Red Devils last term to announce his arrival on to the senior stage in grand style.

But after just returning from a thigh injury, Longstaff will have to wait to add to his heroics in the Premier League.

The Premier League 2 clash against the Cottagers takes place at St James' but the game will be behind closed doors.

Longstaff will be joined by Republic of Ireland international Ciaran Clark and Paul Dummett who also return from injury.

Steve Bruce said: "Matty has trained the last ten days and not had a reaction.

"The U23s play Fulham on Monday so he'll play in that alongside Ciaran and Paul.

"It's an ideal time to let them have 90 minutes."
