Matty Longstaff's Newcastle United future latest as Aberdeen discuss exit clause

Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff could be braced for a recall to his parent club - after Aberdeen failed to provide the midfielder with the game-time the Magpies were hoping for.

With the Dons only getting their season kick-started with a win over Livingston, Stephen Glass released a baffling statement before the match at Pittodrie.

Having only handed Longstaff a measly three starts from the 11 games he has been available, former Toon winger Glass said: "I think, clearly, Matty would’ve liked more game time, clearly we would’ve liked better performances."

United 's loan manager Shola Ameobi has held a dialogue with his former team-mate Glass but the olive branch of matches during the packed festive schedule has been pushed the way of Newcastle.

Glass added: "There’s a lot of games coming in December with a lot of opportunities for a good number of our players and Matty comes under that umbrella."

Newcastle can push the button to recall Longstaff in January where he could be assessed by the new management team under Eddie Howe or reassigned to a new club on loan.

Glass knows he could lose a squad player if the Magpies decide to bring the youngster back.

He said: "That’s not a decision that we take.

"He’s here on loan, there’s a parent club and there’s us and there’s discussions that have to happen."

Longstaff was not in the squad against Livingston and must now wait to see if he is afforded a place on the bench against St Mirren this weekend.

Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman also spent an unhappy spell with the Dons in 2018 when he kept three clean sheets in five matches in the Scottish Premiership before losing his place.
