Matty Longstaff reacts to Newcastle goal vs Manchester United

Matty Longstaff said he just hit the ball and hoped it went in after netting Newcastle's winning goal against Manchester United on his Premier League debut.

United were deserved losers on Tyneside as their win-less run away from home extended to 12 matches and they ended the weekend in 12th place in the top flight.

Describing his goal in a post-match interview with Sky Sports, Longstaff said: "I just thought, 'hit and hope' and luckily it's hit the back of the net and I've ran away celebrating. You can't really describe the feeling, just running away to the fans."

On making his top-flight debut, he added: "Last night you go to bed dreaming of this but you never think it's going to happen. For it to happen, I'm a bit speechless."

Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff was a transfer target for United during the summer window and he revealed his pride at his younger brother's performance.

"I'm over the moon for him, obviously I know how hard he's worked," the 21-year-old said. "To be honest from the first day of pre-season he's probably been the best player and if I'm being honest he's been unlucky to be out of the team.

"We've been struggling a little bit and today he's been a breath of fresh air and like I said I couldn't be prouder of him."

After receiving the man-of-the-match award, the youngster Longstaff brother said: "I have to say I thought he (Sean) was the best player but I'll take it."
