Matty Longstaff 'open minded' on Newcastle United's plans for him this summer - despite rise to first team

Matty Longstaff insists he is open minded about where he will spend this season after breaking on to the first-team stage in real style this summer.

The battling midfielder unleashed an absolute scorcher in the 2-1 win over St Etienne at St James' Park with the moment prompting Steve Bruce to admit he was reconsidering whether to loan him out or not.

This time last year, Rafa Benitez cancelled a loan deal for his older brother Sean when the 21-year-old had his bags packed for season-long stint at Portsmouth.

This summer a clutch of EFL clubs are keen on Longstaff while Scottish Premiership sides such as Kilmarnock and St Mirren were observers of his progress last term.

When asked on what comes next, Longstaff told the Chronicle: "I'll have to wait and see.

"I will take every chance I get.

"The new head coach is here now with his staff.

"When he turned up everybody upped the ante and there was a big swing.

"He has helped out the young lads quite a bit.

"We are all happy to have him here.

"On a personal note if I get chances here great, but if I need EFL football, I will take it.

"I have to wait and see what Newcastle want to do with me."

Longstaff has played alongside his older brother Sean throughout pre-season and the duo became the first brothers since Sammy and Shola Ameobi to star at senior level at the club.

The 19-year-old said: "We did it in the Checkatrade Trophy and we were proud of that, but doing it in the first team for the side you have grown up watching together is fantastic.

"We dreamt of doing it as kids.

"So to achieve that accomplishment together is something special."

The Longstaff brothers have been sharing lifts to training this summer, and giving an insight to their life when on the road, Matty said: "We are always speaking to mam and dad on away trips and they are always like: 'Can you put Sean on?'

"And I'm always saying I'm in a different room to him!

"But it is great to have that close bond.

"To have him close to me is a big help, not just for me, but for the other young lads as well.

"He has been through this very recently so he will give you tips in training."
