Matty Longstaff on England's radar as under-21 boss admits he's been 'brilliant'

England under-21 manager Aidy Boothroyd says that the national team “are aware” of Newcastle breakout star Matty Longstaff.

Longstaff’s brother Sean was due for a call-up before he injured his knee against West Ham . He’s missed out on the squad so far this season as he battles to return to full fitness.

And it has emerged that his brother Matty is also on the radar for the Three Lions, with Boothroyd admitting he’s watched the Newcastle teenager.

“We are certainly aware of him. It’s a little bit early. There are one or two who have been at it for a period of time. That’s not to say he won’t get in because I’ve been to see him,” the England under-21 manager said.

“Last week was brilliant - it was great to see and great for football I thought. The whole crowd connected with it. He’s up against some good players in Tom Davies, Joe Willock, Phil Foden and Oliver Skipp. There is some talent there – it’s a tough area to break into.”

Longstaff is being monitored by both Scotland and Northern Ireland , who believe he could qualify. The youngster actually spent part of his childhood in Sweden, where dad David was playing ice hockey for Djurgårdens.
