Matty Longstaff laps up Newcastle debut and claims he dreamed about Man Utd goal night before

Matty Longstaff described his match-winning debut as “unbelievable” and “surreal”.

The 19-year-old said: “I dreamed about it last night, this is kind how it of went!”

Longstaff played alongside brother Sean, 21, both North Shields lads and academy products, and sons of Dave, ex-GB ice hockey star.

It was Longstaff Jnr's second senior appearance and he walked off St James' Park and said: "Thank you", to his boss Steve Bruce.

“Ridiculous after what he had just done,” said Bruce. “It was emotional.”

The brothers in arms set the tone against United, and Matty smashed home from 20 yards after a swift counter attack led by Allan Saint-Maximin and Jetro Willems.

He said: "Getting to play with Sean was unbelievable. We used to kick each other in the garden growing up so to be on the same team, for our hometown club, and to win against Man Utd, who are a good side, is a bit surreal.

"I found out I was in the team after training yesterday. Your belly starts to turn a bit, you get a bit nervous and then you don't sleep much.

“Last night you go to bed dreaming of it but you never really think it will happen. I'm over the moon.”

Bruce added: “He trains every day with a beaming smile. He is refreshing, wants to play and is a great kid. I am delighted.

“It is my first win against Man U as a manager. Matty Longstaff has beaten them in his first game and it has taken me 20 odd years.”

After losing 5-0 last weekend to Leicester this win brought relief for boss Bruce.

Bruce said: “The big thing was to get a reaction and response. There has been harsh words spoken but you need your team to perform.

“That is the biggest insult of the lot it to question my organisation, tactics.”

But heroes of the day were the Longstaff's. “They are young lads and have bumps on the road before being fully established but they have made a big statement today.”
