Matty Kennedy completes Aberdeen move as Dons agree fee with St Johnstone for winger

Matty Kennedy has joined Aberdeen six months early after the Dons agreed a fee of around £70k to take him from St Johnstone.

The winger had signed a pre-contract with the club but talks have been ongoing since to take him north in the January window instead of waiting to the summer.

It's a huge boost for Derek McInnes ahead of the second half of the campaign and he becomes the Dons fourth signing of the window on a three-and-a-half year contract.

Dylan McGeouch joined from Sunderland, Mark Gallagher signed on from Ross County while Jon Gallagher agreed an extension to his loan deal from Atlanta United.

Aberdeen were willing to move onto other targets in the January window if they couldn't agree a deal for Kennedy.

Record Sport revealed on Thursday that a move was on the cards for Wolves winger Ryan Giles if they coudn't fast-track Kennedy's arrival.

McInnes is also likely to look at add more signings after bemoaning the lack of quality options in attack after Wednesday night's defeat to Motherwell.

Kennedy will help improve that but he said: “We’re looking for that kind of quality and consistency because we’re lacking in the final third. The fans’ reaction is understandable because we’re all frustrated.

“We needed a bit of good fortune but we lacked cutting edge and quality up front. That meant Motherwell got the points.

“I’m looking for more up front as we’re too reliant on Sam Cosgrove but apart from the goal, defensively, we were solid.

“But creativity, speed and quality in the final third has been lacking for months. Hopefully we can get the necessary players in. We lost the battle but we can win the fight and get a European spot.”
