Matty Donnelly warns Tyrone's rivals that the best is yet to come after All-Ireland success

Matty Donnelly says it’s scary that new All-Ireland champions Tyrone haven’t reached their ceiling yet.

Donnelly (30) landed his first All-Ireland senior medal at the weekend as Tyrone inflicted more heartbreak on Mayo.

Mayo haven’t won a Sam Maguire decider in 13 attempts now, since 1989 - including replays in 1996 and 2016.

Their famine is now 70 years, stretching from 1951.

Saturday evening’s 2-14 to 0-15 triumph was Tyrone’s fourth All-Ireland and their first since 2008.

A delighted Donnelly says it brought redemption for the 2018 decider defeat by Tyrone: “It 100 percent is,” he beamed.

“You don’t often get big chances at the big one and this was a second chance for a lot of us.

“First chance for some but you just never know when they come around. We were determined to grasp it and we did.

“The scary thing is, that team probably isn’t operating at optimum levels yet.

“We haven’t reached our ceiling yet, so we have to look at that, and that makes the future exciting as well.”
