Mattie Kenny hints at appealing Shane Barrett's red card after Na Fianna man was sent off in Dublin's win over Carlow

Mattie Kenny believes Dublin have a strong case to appeal Shane Barrett's red card from their routine 2-22 to 1-13 weekend win over Carlow.

Eamonn Dillon scored both goals as the Dubs eased to the two points away in Netwatch Cullen Park, despite the Na Fianna man's dismissal around the halfway mark.

But his challenge on Carlow midfielder Jack Kavanagh was not enough to warrant the dismissal, according to Kenny.

"My understanding of the rule is that it is supposed to be striking with intent," Kenny told the Irish Mirror.

"I think a guy broke through and Shane’s reaction was to put up his hand and his hurl, there was no striking action. Was his arm and his hurl high? Yes, it was. But there was no striking action.

“There were five or six other incidents like that in the course of the game where guys would break a tackle and either the player ducks or their hand and hurl comes up. Unless there’s a deliberate striking action it shouldn’t be a red card.”

Kenny also indicated that Liam Rushe's ankle injury may also keep him out of the crucial game against Galway in two weeks time.
