Matthijs de Ligt would ‘absolutely’ suit life at Manchester United, according to Jaap Stam.

Standard Sport understands that United are convinced that Barcelona have won the race to sign the Ajax captain.

De Ligt however says he will put talk of a transfer deal to one side to focus on the Netherlands' upcoming Nations League semi-final against England on June 6.

Stam meanwhile was back at Old Trafford as stars of United’s 1999 Treble season took part in a legends match against Bayern Munich.

Quizzed on the future of 19-year-old de Ligt, Stam said he would ‘love to see’ the youngster head for the red half of Manchester.

"I think he would suit very well over here if they're trying to pick him up," he told Press Association Sport.

"I am not sure if that's the truth, of course, because a lot of things have been said and have been written as well.

"But he is a player that absolutely fits in here, but it is up to him as well.

"He's the type of player that a manager, I think, wants to work with."
