Matthijs de Ligt is expected to decide within the next week whether he will join Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain.
The Ajax defender is one of the most sought-after footballers in the world after a stunning season in Amsterdam.
He looked set to join former teammate Frenkie de Jong at the Nou Camp before he upped his wage demands.
That gave hope to Manchester United but De Ligt will only join a club in the Champions League.
That leaves Barcelona and PSG with the Spanish champions still in pole position.
And De Ligt will make his decision after Sunday's Nations League final between the Netherlands and Portugal.
The 19-year-old went from zero to hero on Thursday night as his country beat England 3-1 in the semi-final.
De Ligt conceded a first-half penalty which was converted by Marcus Rashford but then bulleted home a headed leveller in the second half.
The Dutch went on to win the tie in extra time thanks to two errors from John Stones.
De Ligt said afterwards: ""The penalty action was very silly and I know it very well, I received a ball from De Roon and my intention was to play the ball with Cillessen, but I was late.
"It was very stupid, because I should not have sent the ball to the goalkeeper. I am very demanding of myself and I had to compensate for that error ".
The Netherlands boss Ronaldo Koeman added: "It's great he corrected his own mistake and headed the equaliser. It shows we all make mistakes ... I don't know what Matthijs was thinking but maybe we will have a chat later."
