Matthijs de Ligt's 'huge transfer demands' stopped move from happening

Matthijs de Ligt's mammoth transfer demands were behind his failed move to Barcelona .

Nou Camp chiefs had made De Ligt one of their priority signings this summer, looking to add him alongside his former Ajax team-mate Frenkie de Jong.

Although talks took place, a deal was never forthcoming due to the requests of De Ligt's agent, Mino Raiola.

The Dutch international ended up joining Juventus earlier this month in a £67million deal.

However, Mundo Deportivo report that he could well have moved to Barcelona if the deal if it was not for Raiola's outlandish contract demands.

It is reported that he believed De Ligt should be earning a higher salary than some of the senior players in the squad - including Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba.

Barcelona were immediately put off by the demands.

De Ligt made his Juventus debut off the bench against Tottenham earlier this week, before starting against Inter Milan, but scored an unfortunate own goal.

Raiola spoke on the day of De Ligt's medical at Juventus about why the Italian champions are the best team for him.

“It’s not a question of who wanted him most, but Juve are the best team for him,” Raiola told reporters.

“It’s important for a defender to come to Italy. He can learn to become the best in the world here.

“This step is necessary for his career. Certainly, he’s the best young defender. After that, he only needs a bit of time to show that he’s the best on a different level.

“In terms of work and mentality, he approaches and, indeed even surpasses, Nedved. He reminds me of Ibra for his ambition.

“It’s always good to play alongside great champions like Bonucci. As for whether Ronaldo told him to join Juve, you have to ask him. I don’t know.

“The decision to join Juve was a considered one. It wasn’t made in just a day. It was a long process.”
