Matthijs de Ligt reacts to Marcus Rashford penalty incident amid Manchester United speculation

Matthijs de Ligt admits he was 'very silly' to concede a penalty for a foul against Marcus Rashford on Thursday night.

Ajax captain De Ligt scored an equalising goal for the Netherlands as they fought from behind to defeat England 3-1 in the Nations League semi-finals.

England had taken the lead in the first-half when Manchester United forward Rashford netted from the spot having been brought down in the box by De Ligt.

Speculation continues to mount around the 19-year-old with recent reports suggesting he could even become a club teammate of Rashford this summer with a potential move to United.

De Ligt was saved of his blushes for his defensive error, and speaking after the match he admitted the mistake spurred him on to redeem himself with the goal.

"The penalty action was very silly and I know it very well.

"I received a ball from De Roon and my intention was to play the ball with Cillessen, but I was late, it was very stupid, because I should not have sent the ball to the goalkeeper.

"I'm very demanding with myself and I had to compensate that error."

Speaking ahead of the game the Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman urged De Ligt to join a club where he would be playing regular football next season.

"I spoke to Matthijs one week ago about his future and that's secret," he said.

"What I told all the young players who may be thinking about making a step, is that the most important thing is to keep playing.

"Keep getting minutes to develop your football, that's the most important thing and the way the club is playing is also a really important reason to make your choice.

"He and his family, his agents and the people around him will make the best decision for him."
