Matthijs de Ligt quizzed on future as Barcelona and Juventus lead chase for Ajax star

He may be only 19 but Matthijs de Ligt again showed why he's one of world football's most prized assets as he led Ajax to a stunning Champions League victory over Juventus.

The Dutch international captained the Eredivisie leaders in Turin and headed the winner as Ajax stunned Juve to make it into the quarter finals.

Unsurprisingly de Ligt is now expected to leave the Amsterdam club in the summer and has an impressive list of suitors waiting at the door.

Manchester United , Ajax, Arsenal, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and many more have sent scouts to watch him over the last 18 months.

Juve and Barcelona lead the fight with recent suggestions in Spain are that Barca are ready to cash in on World Cup winner Samuel Umtiti to land him.

As De Ligt made his way through the mixed zone in Turin, fresh from celebrating in the Ajax dressing room with his teammates, he was captured on camera and asked about his future by El Chiringuito.

Namely, whether it was possible to say no to Barcelona.

"I don't know" came De Ligt's response, along with a smile and a wink.

Asked when he would announce his transfer to Barcelona, De Ligt was remaining coy, replying: "Announce? There is nothing to announce."

It's understood that a move with pal De Jong to Catalunya is De Ligt's No.1 choice this summer.

Ajax coach Erik ten Hag has already confirmed there is "zero chance" of De Ligt remaining in the Eredivisie next season.

But a first semi-final since 1997 - three years before De Ligt’s birth - has the Dutch dreaming of European glory.

"I can't describe what kind of emotion we have at the moment,” added De Ligt post-game. "It's unbelievable what we achieved, we are a squad from the Netherlands and we show the world what we can do.

"We showed it in the Bernabeu (against Madrid), we showed it against Bayern Munich (at the group stage) and now we showed it against Juventus.

"But we are never satisfied and the next game is also going to be important, we'll see what happens.

"There is so much potential in our team and we are all still young. You see us grow every game."
