Matthijs de Ligt 'open to Man Utd transfer' with Ajax star keen on becoming 'poster boy'

Matthijs de Ligt is reportedly open to a move to Manchester United - and he likes the idea of becoming the Red Devils' poster boy.

Ajax's inspirational 19-year-old captain looks set to leave the Dutch giants this summer with Barcelona heavy favourites to secure his signature.

But De Ligt remains interested in a potential move to Old Trafford, despite United's absence from next season's Champions League, report the Telegraph.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to overhaul his squad this summer after a dismal campaign which saw United finish sixth in the Premier League and crash out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

And defence is a particular area of worry, with De Ligt seen as someone the backline can be built around for the next generation.

Barcelona seem almost-certain to land outgoing Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann, who has confirmed his departure from the Spanish capital this summer.

And there are questions over whether Barca would be able to fund both Griezmann and De Ligt in the same window.

The Catalan giants agreed a deal for De Ligt's Ajax teammate Frenkie De Jong in January ahead of a summer move, and were hopeful they would be able to do something similar with the defender for the end of next season.

But his rapid rise has complicated matters and Ajax could push for an immediate £75million sale this summer - opening the door for United and a clutch of other to European clubs.

Liverpool and Manchester City have also been linked, and De Ligt is likely to make a decision on his future after playing for the Netherlands at the UEFA Nations League finals in Portugal.
