Matthijs de Ligt joins Juventus as Ajax captain completes €85m transfer on five-year deal

Juventus have signed Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt in a deal worth up to €85.5million.

The Netherlands international has agreed a five-year contract with the Serie A champions.

The 19-year-old was pictured on the club's official Twitter account arriving for his medical at Juventus after flying to Turin by private jet.

De Ligt played an important part in Ajax's run to the Champions League semi-finals and quickly attracted interest from several elite European clubs, with Manchester United, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain all heavily linked.

But it appears the opportuntity of working with stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo was too good to turn down, after de Ligt revealed Ronaldo told him to join the Bianconeri when the two clubs met in the Champions League.

The deal to bring de Ligt to Italy is the third-most expensive for a defender in history, with only Virgil van Dijk's move to Liverpool (£75m) and Lucas Hernandez to Bayern Munich earlier this summer (£71m) costing more.

De Ligt made 77 league appearances for the Eredivisie giants, scoring eight goals, and became the club's youngest captain at the age of 18 in March last year.
