Matthijs de Ligt gives fresh update on Ajax future amid Man Utd and Barcelona transfer speculation

Matthijs de Ligt has confirmed "several clubs" are interested in a summer move for him, amid speculation that he could join Manchester United.

The Ajax defender is on Barcelona's radar, where he could follow teammate Frenkie De Jong in moving to the Nou Camp this summer.

MEN Sport understands United don't expect to sign the centre-back, despite the ongoing rumours linking him with the Reds.

But it seems very likely that the 19-year-old will leave Ajax this summer, as he opened up on his future and added that there's still a possibility he'll remain with this season's Dutch champions and Champions League semi-finalists.

"My decision will be based on what would be best for my career," De Ligt told Dutch media outlet NOS.

"Where can I develop myself the best way? Where do I get to play the most? I will base my choice on that.

"I don’t know when I will make my decision but I prefer to start pre-season with my new club, or Ajax. As long as I have a contract at Ajax, there's definitely a chance I will stay."

De Ligt was also asked if Barcelona were his 'dream club' amid suggestions that the Catalans are in pole position to sign him.

"No. I don’t have a dream club apart from Ajax," he added. "The only dream I had was to play for Ajax. I know there is a lot of interest but I don’t rule out staying.

"A lot is being written and said. That has been true for the whole year. It doesn’t make me crazy, so I have no problem there’s being so much written.

"Frenkie de Jong already made his decision and I haven’t, that’s the way it is.

"You look at what’s the best for you, you need to make your own decision. Several clubs are interested, that’s right."
