Matthew Stafford not at Lions voluntary activities as wife Kelly battles brain tumor

While many new faces made an appearance in Allen Park for the first day of Detroit Lions voluntary activities on Monday, one prominent player was missing. Quarterback Matthew Stafford did not attend the conditioning and strength training session.

He has a very good excuse. Stafford’s wife, Kelly, is battling an acoustic neuroma brain tumor. The Staffords revealed the unfortunate diagnosis earlier this month. It is not cancerous but the tumor will need to be surgically removed. In an Instagram post, Kelly asked for prayers for the next two weeks, which might indicate she is due for surgery this week.

The Staffords have three children under the age of 3.

The Lions do not have any mandatory activities until minicamp begins on June 4th. It is unknown if Stafford will make an appearance before that at the voluntary OTAs in May.
