Matthew McConaughey has torn into his “illiberal” Hollywood peers for “patronising” those with opposing political views.
The Dallas Buyers Club star appeared on Russell Brand’s podcast Under the Skin last week, where the pair criticised famous stars for their treatment of “ordinary working people”.
After Brand asked McConaughey if he had noticed a “condemnation” of everyday voters by his fellow Hollywood stars, the actor replied: “There are a lot [of people] on that illiberal left that absolutely condescend, patronise, and are arrogant towards the other 50 per cent.”
He said it was this outlook that led to the same people being “in absolute denial” about Donald Trump’s election victory in 2016.
Brand agreed, stating: “[There is] a kind of offhandedness, like, ‘Oh, they’re dumb, they’re voting for Brexit, they’re voting for Trump.’
He said: "I don’t like it, and I don’t like to hear it.”
McConaughey suggested that, following Joe Biden’s win last month, Trump supporters are now the ones in denial as “they’ve been fed fake news”.
“[Now] it looks like Biden’s our guy,” he said, adding; “Now you’ve got the right that’s in denial, cause their side has fake news. And I understand, they’ve been fed fake news.
"No one knows what the hell to believe, right? So they’re putting down their last bastion of defence.”
