People on social media have reacted with disbelief at the sight of an ‘insanely tall’ mourner walking in the Queen’s procession.

He towered above soldiers and sailors on the walk alongside the Queen’s coffin prompting many to appeal information on his identity.

One Twitter user wrote: “Who is this insanely tall man? Is this the royal Slenderman?”

Another, Rich, said: “Anyone know who the exceedingly tall man is?” Another Twitter user, Emma added: “I don’t know who he is, but he is a very tall man.” Another tweet joked: “Who is he? He would be handy for changing lightbulbs.”Another added: “I can’t stop paying attention to the incredibly tall man walking in front of the vehicle carrying the queens coffin. Did they bring in the tallest man in the world for the occasion?”

The tall man was reported to be Matthew Magee, a former assistant private secretary to the late Queen. Standing at 7ft 2in, he towered over Her Majesty who was only 5ft 3in.

He was appointed to the role in 2018 and was often mistaken for a royal protection officer. Mr Magee was also the Duke of Kent Prince Edward’s private secretary before this.

Mr Magee is one of the tallest people in the Crown employ.

He is even taller than ‘Tall Paul’, another employee of the Royal Family who featured alongside the Queen and Daniel Craig in the classic James Bond sketch for the London Olympics.

One royal viewer was keen to set the record straight, wrote: “If anyone else is as curious as I am, the very tall man in front of the hearse in the Queen’s procession is Matthew Magee, her 7’2” private security.”
