Matthew Hoppe pens Hibs farewell message as USA striker returns to Middlesbrough after lacklustre loan

Matthew Hoppe has penned his thanks to the Hibs support after his loan spell from Middlesbrough came to an end.

Hoppe joined on a temporary basis in January with Kevin Nisbet's injury woes threatening to derail Hibs' European football bid, and despite making just nine Scottish Premiership appearances, the American striker did contribute with one goal. It would never be enough to make the move permanent, especially just one year into his four-year deal with the Teeside club.

And, despite Harry McKirdy being ruled out for four to six months and Nisbet leaving for Millwall, any potential move that would take Hoppe to Easter Road for a permanent spell is now definitely off the cards after the eight-time USMNT cap signalled his farewells to the Leith faithful in a well-mannered Instagram post - which wished the club the best next season after their continental dreams were realised with a fifth-placed finish.

Hoppe said in an Instagram post: "Thank you to the fans, players, and staff @hibernianfootballclub for the opportunities and memories during my loan.

"I’m very happy we were able to reach our goal of qualifying for Europe, and I wish you guys nothing but the best for the future!"

Hoppe will now return to Middlesbrough, where he will battle for a starting place alongside the likes of Chuba Akpom and Marcus Forss.
