Matthew Fisher reflects on England debut and outlines future ambitions

Matthew Fisher made his England debut last month in the second Test against the West Indies, and the 24-year-old is now desperate to capitalise and earn more caps in the future.

Fisher enjoyed the perfect start to his international career when he dismissed John Campbell with just his second delivery. He ended the match with figures of 1-71 on what was a lifeless pitch in Barbados.

Reflecting on his debut, Fisher stated it has provided him with even more motivation to represent England. He said: "I was chatting to Zak Crawley and he said to me 'You think that you want this before you play for England, but once you do you'll want it so much more'. That summed it up perfectly.

"Even two or three days after the Test I was thinking 'How can I get physically stronger, how can I bowl better'. I've already had meetings with the bowling coach Jon Lewis about using the crease more.

"I remember learning so many things in my first-class debut and it's the same with my first Test. I learn fast and I give myself the best chance with the way I eat and drink, I do the right things.

"I just need to play, to get experience and learn. I'm up to 22 first-class games now but I can't wait for it to be 50 and see how much better I am then."

Fisher's career has been plagued by injury struggles, with the seamer only playing five County Championship games last season. However, he had long been tipped for the top, having made his senior debut for Yorkshire at the age of just 15, and Fisher is keen to build on his international experience.

"I'm hoping that I'm a better bowler for this experience, from bowling at Test players for a month," he added. "There are times in the nets when you think you're bowling at 70mph because of how they play you.

"They can make you feel really slow then you start to get a few plays and misses, bowl a couple out, get them lbw. Hopefully I've stepped up a notch. Now it's about winning games for Yorkshire, because that's the thing that will see me getting picked.

"I just want to push myself as far as I can. Some people might have more talent than me, some people might be better than me, but I want to do whatever I can with what I’ve got. If that’s one Test or a hundred Tests, I just want to get the most out of myself."
