Matteo Guendouzi 'taunted Brighton players about their wages' during defeat

Matteo Guendouzi mocked Brighton's players over their inferior wages at the Amex on Saturday afternoon.

The Arsenal midfield was in the headlines after grabbing Neal Maupay, scorer of Brighton's winner, around the throat.

The contest got heated once Maupay clashed with Bernd Leno, which resulted in the German being taken off on a stretcher.

But Guendouzi continued with the verbals, according to the Daily Mail, and made his opponents aware of their earnings in comparison to him and his Arsenal team-mates.

The Frenchman earns around £40,000-a-week at the Emirates, while the club's top earner is Mesut Ozil who earns more than £300,000-a-week.

Brighton have a wage ceiling of around £50,000-a-week.

After the match Maupay suggested that Arsenal's players needed more "humility" with his comments believed to be aimed at Guendouzi.

A source said: "He (Guendouzi) was saying the Brighton players were s*** and that he and his team-mates earn so much more than they ever will.

"He's done it in other games as well. Arsenal are a decent club and hate that sort of behaviour."

Guendouzi had his conduct called out but he will not face a violent conduct charge the FA have confirmed.

But former Gunner Perry Groves hopes that Mikel Arteta will have a word with the 21-year-old.

He told talkSPORT : "I've heard a few things about Guendouzi's attitude. You want your players to be confident and a bit arrogant on the pitch but he's not good enough to go around giving people verbals.

"If Maupay's been getting it in the ear all game from Guendouzi and he then goes and scores the winner, he is right to say, 'What have you got to say now?'

"Someone, whether it's Arteta, the coaching staff or the senior players, needs to tell Guendouzi to wind his neck in."
