Matteo Guendouzi in contention for Arsenal return as Mikel Arteta shows authority

Matteo Guendouzi was in the thick of the action as Arsenal trained for the final time at London Colney before they head off to Greece to face Olympiakos in the Europa League.

The Frenchman was dropped from the squad for Sunday's 4-0 Premier League victory over Newcastle United following a row with manager Mikel Arteta and his coaching staff.

Guendouzi was known to be unhappy during the Gunners' recent warm weather training camp in Dubai, and after voicing his displeasure he was swiftly met with a show of authority from his rookie manager.

After axing him for the win over the Magpies, Arteta has recalled him to the squad for the game in Athens, and he could play as Lucas Torreira is missing with illness.

In what will be Arteta's first taste of European football as a manager, the Gunners return to Europa League action looking in much better health than they were at the end of the year in the same competition.

Unai Emery was sacked after Arsenal lost 2-1 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of November, with interim boss Freddie Ljungberg presiding over the 2-2 draw at Standard Liege in their final group game.

Arteta has now overseen 10 games in change since his December appointment, with Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League defeats on Tuesday night ensuring that the Gunners and Bayern Munich are now the only unbeaten teams across all competitions in Europe's top five leagues in 2020; winning four games and drawing four.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Nicolas Pepe, Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette all found the net in the Newcastle win.

Three of that quartet are expected to start the last-32 tie in Greece, with Ozil not even in the squad, as his wife is due to give birth.
