Matteo Guendouzi 'booked for sarcasm' by referee Mike Dean in Arsenal FA Cup tie

Arsenal's Matteo Guendouzi drew the ire of referee Mike Dean for a sarcastic response during Monday night's FA Cup fifth round tie at Portsmouth.

Gunners midfielder Guendouzi won a free-kick towards the end of the first half of the clash at Fratton Park, but when he tried to take it quickly he was admonished by referee Dean for placing the ball in the wrong position.

Guendouzi then tried again to take the kick, only to be told that the ball was still not where it should be.

Angered by Dean's insistence, Guendouzi then theatrically picked the ball up and placed it in the correct position in full view of Dean.

The official wasn't having any of what he saw as a sarcastic approach from the young Frenchman though, and brandish a yellow card for dissent.

Veteran referee Dean recently admitted that he can be a showman on the pitch, with his officiating style often amusing and angering fans in equal measure.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live's Peter Crouch Podcast , he said: "I walk out, without being arrogant – there is a touch of arrogance and I know there is – but it’s also a lot of confidence in myself because I believe in my ability.

"I do come across like a showman. If the ball comes towards me I will let it go through my legs, I love a stepover.

"I love what I do and the way I referee. It kind of comes out I enjoy what I do. I’ve had this the past 10 years."

The Gunners lost Lucas Torreira to injury early on at Fratton Park, but went in ahead at half-time through a Sokratis goal.
