Matt Targett pinpoints massive advantage Newcastle United have over top four rivals Spurs

Matt Targett reckons that a jumping St James' Park can help Newcastle United take a major step towards Champions League qualification on Sunday.

The left-back is pushing for a start in Eddie Howe's team but is looking forward to the comforts of home after three successive away matches. Newcastle yielded six points from nine against West Ham, Brentford and Aston Villa from a clutch of games many may have accepted a win and two draws from.

Targett was blown away by Newcastle's travelling army at Villa Park with 3,000 fans staying behind to applaud the team's efforts - despite their worst performance of the campaign by some margin. Looking back Targett told Chronicle Live: "They're incredible - home and away.

"We stayed on the pitch at Villa for a long time to show our appreciation because we know they travel a long distance and we appreciate it so much. It was a great effort from them."

But now all attention turns to Tottenham where the supporters will have a key role again in the eyes of the popular Eastleigh lad. The former Southampton star said: "There’s plenty of football to go and we know Tottenham will be a tough game with both teams fighting for that top four spot. But we’re back at home in front of our fans and they’ve been incredible this season so we will be full of confidence and look to put this behind us."
