The Harry Potter show is happening whether people want it to or not and part of the upsetting aspect of it is seeing who is willing to work with J.K. Rowling. And one rumored choice for Voldemort had me begging him to say “no.”
One such actor was Matt Smith. The actor, who became a household name as the Doctor in Doctor Who, was thrown into the ring for Lord Voldemort aka Tom Riddle aka J.K. Rowling’s other pen name. And if I am being honest, I was very worried that Smith would entertain the idea. Not that I thought he’d side with Rowling and her harmful views given his past support of the trans community. It is a big franchise to take on and many actors would love to try to play the villain.
Luckily though, Matt Smith has seemingly put the rumor to rest. During an interview on The Today Show for his upcoming film Caught Stealing, Smith was asked about the rumor. “I think following in the footsteps of the great Ralph Fiennes is a very very difficult mantle for someone so good luck to whoever it is. It ain’t gonna be me.”
What has been rumored is that we won’t know who Voldemort is until the reveal meaning that those of us who have decided to not watch the show will find out on social media but at least I know that it isn’t going to be Matt Smith.
I want my favorites to stay clear of the show
This new Harry Potter series is a mixed bag because you can, and should, criticize the adults who join the series. On the flip of that, the children who are cast are not people we should talk negatively about. They’re children. The adults though are free game to criticize. Hence why I don’t want to think one of my favorite actors would take on a role in the franchise.
Matt Smith has been a favorite for years but I also think that he’s been ins his villain era recently with Morbius, House of the Dragon, and his upcoming role in Star Wars, I’d love to see Smith move away from the villain roles after all of this and not fall into another franchise where he’s the big bad.
Anyway, be like Matt Smith. Turn down roles in the new Harry Potter series.
