Matt Smith praises the decision to choose Ncuti Gatwa as the next Dr Who

Ncuti Gatwa has been called an inspired choice to become the 14th Dr Who, by former Time Lord, Matt Smith.

The 29-year-old Sex Education star will take over from Broadchurch actress Jodie Whittaker, who is leaving the show after four years in the leading role. Matt was the 11th incumbent of the TARDIS, taking over from David Tennant in 2010, before handing the baton, or sonic screwdriver, over to Peter Capaldi.

Matt was at the Paris Fan Festival recently and when asked of his opinion on the new doctor, he said: “There’s a warmth and wit and real depth to his talent. He’s an inspired choice and I’m really excited for the show.”

Ncuti is a Rwandan Scottish actor, who appeared in TV shows Bob Servant and Stonemouth, before getting his big gig on Sex Education in 2018, playing Eric Effiong. He won a BAFTA Scotland Award for best Actor in Television in 2020 and earned three successive BAFTA Television Award nominations for Best Male Comedy Performance, from 2020 to 2022.

He will take over as the first black Dr Who on producer Russell T Davies’ return to the programme following over 10 years away. And Ncuti was virtually speechless after discovering he had been chosen to take on the coveted role.

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling,” he said. “A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and, of course, a little bit scared.

“This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same.”

Ncuti also thanked previous doctors Jodie and David for their words of support, writing on Instagram : “There are a lot of thank yous, so please excuse the cringe. But man’s feeling grateful at the moment.

“The Doctor herself, Jodie Whittaker and Mr David Tennant for your beautiful words of support and encouragement on BAFTA day. I was absolutely cacking my pants and honestly speaking to you two was priceless.”

Ncuti’s dad Tharcisse revealed how proud his family are of his son being handed the role, telling the Daily Mail: “We are very proud. We have congratulated him. That’s all we can do. We are just so pleased. That is all we can say.”
