Matt Smith has paid tribute to Prince Philip, who he called "the man".

The actor played the Duke of Edinburgh in the first two seasons of The Crown on Netflix, alongside Claire Foy as the Queen.

On Friday, Buckingham Palace confirmed the sad news that Prince Philip has died at the age of 99.

Matt offered his condolences to the Queen, who was married to Philip for over 70 years, and paid tribute to his character.

He told the Express: "I'd like to offer my condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family.

"Prince Philip was the man. And he knew it.

"99 and out, but what an innings. And what style.

"Thank you for your service old chap - it won't be the same without you."

Matt played Prince Philip as a young man in twenty episodes of The Crown between 2016 and 2017.

A statement from Buckingham Palace, released at midday, said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
